Pharmacognostical and biological study of Tribulus Terrestris L. from Zygophyllaceae family in the middle region

One of the most important medicinal plants is Tribulus terrestris (T.T) from Zygophyllaceae family [1], it is an herbal plant [2] and is found in the Syrian flora [3]. According to many clinical studies, it has many activities such as antiurolithic, diuretic, aphrodisiac, anthelmintic [4], and wound healing [5]. All the previous activities are explained due to the presence of abundant phytochemicals such as: protodioscin [4], dioscin [6], disogenin [7], kaempefrol [8], quercetin [9], and harmane [10].

A pharmacognostic study is very important to avoid adulteration [11], that includes a microscopical study of the flowers, leaves and fruits [12] [13] [14], also detection of the various phytochemical classes that are present in the previous parts [15]. Calculating the content of flavonoids and phenols can help with choosing the best harvesting time of the parts and studying the biological effects. Flavonoid assay is done by the aluminum chloride method and for the phenol content, the Folin-ciocaltu method is used [16].

Wound healing activity is one of the latest studies that are done on T.T. It has been observed that the powder of fruits (in an ointment) and methanolic and aqueous extract in gel of leaves have significant wound healing activity on an incision, excision and burn wounds on rats [17] [18] [19]. This activity is explained by the work of flavonoids because it has antioxidant effects [21].
