The International Conference on Intelligent Computing (ICIC) was formed to provide an annual forum dedicated to the emerging and challenging topics in artificial intelligence, machine learning, bioinformatics, and computational biology, etc. It aims to bring together researchers and practitioners from both academia and industry to share ideas, problems and solutions related to the multifaceted aspects of intelligent computing.the theme for this conference was “Emerging Intelligent Computing Technology and Applications”. Papers related to this theme were especially solicited, including theories, methodologies, and applications in science and technology.

Clinical text mining : Secondary use of electronic patient records
Describes the results of natural language processing and machine learning methods applied to clinical text from electronic patient records. It is divided into twelve chapters. Chapters 1-4 discuss the history and background of the original paper-based patient records, their purpose, and how they are written and structured. These initial chapters do not require any technical or medical background knowledge. The remaining eight chapters are more technical in nature and describe various medical classifications and terminologies such as ICD diagnosis codes, SNOMED CT, MeSH, UMLS, and ATC. Chapters 5-10 cover basic tools for natural language processing and information retrieval, and how to apply them to clinical text. The book’s closing chapters present a number of applications in clinical text mining and summarise the lessons learned from the previous chapters.

This volume presents the proceedings of the 11th IFIP/IEEE International Conference on Management of Multimedia and Mobile Networks and Services (MMNS 2008), which was held on Samos, Greece during September 22–26 as part of the 4th International Week on Management of Networks and Services (Manweek 2008). As in the previous three years, the Manweek umbrella - lowed an international audience of researchers and scientists from industry and academia – who are researching and developing management systems – to share views and ideas and present their state-of-the-art results. The other events co-located with Manweek 2008 were the 19th IFIP/IEEE International Workshop on Distributed Systems.
Managed Software Evolution
This book presents the outcomes of the “Design for Future – Managed Software Evolution” .The different lifecycles of software and hardware platforms lead to interoperability problems in such systems. Instead of separating the development, adaptation and evolution of software and its platforms, as well as aspects like operation, monitoring and maintenance, they should all be integrated into one overarching process. Accordingly, the book is split into three major parts, the first of which includes an introduction to the nature of software evolution, followed by an overview of the specific challenges and a general introduction to the case studies used in the project. The second part of the book consists of the main chapters on knowledge carrying software, and cover tacit knowledge in software evolution, continuous design decision support, model-based round-trip engineering for software product lines, performance analysis strategies, maintaining security in software evolution, learning from evolution for evolution, and formal verification of evolutionary changes. In turn, the last part of the book presents key findings and spin-offs. The individual chapters there describe various case studies, along with their benefits, deliverables and the respective lessons learned. An overview of future research topics rounds out the coverage.

Machine Learning for Multimedia Content Analysis
Challenges in complexity and variability of multimedia data have led to revolutions in machine learning techniques. Multimedia data, such as digital images, audio streams and motion video programs, exhibit richer structures than simple, isolated data items. A number of pixels in a digital image collectively conveys certain visual content to viewers. A TV video program consists of both audio and image streams that unfold the underlying story. To recognize the visual content of a digital image, or to understand the underlying story of a video program, we may need to label sets of pixels or groups of image and audio frames jointly.
Machine Learning for Audio, Image and Video Analysis : Theory and Applications
The book is organized in four parts: The first focuses on technical aspects, basic mathematical notions and elementary machine learning techniques. The second provides an extensive survey of most relevant machine learning techniques for media processing, while the third part focuses on applications and shows how techniques are applied in actual problems. The fourth part contains detailed appendices that provide notions about the main mathematical instruments used throughout the text
Long-Term Preservation of Digital Documents : Principles and Practices
Key to our culture is that we can disseminate information, and then maintain and access it over time. While we are rapidly advancing from vulnerable physical solutions to superior, digital media, preserving and using data over the long term involves complicated research challenges and organization efforts. Uwe Borghoff and his coauthors address the problem of storing, reading, and using digital data for periods longer than 50 years. They briefly describe several markup and document description languages like TIFF, PDF, HTML, and XML, explain the most important techniques such as migration and emulation, and present the OAIS (Open Archival Information System) Reference Model. To complement this background information on the technology issues the authors present the most relevant international preservation projects, such as the Dublin Core Metadata Initiative, and experiences from sample projects run by the Cornell University Library and the National Library of the Netherlands. A rated survey list of available systems and tools completes the book.
Logical Data Modeling : What it is and How to do it
LOGICAL DATA MODELING: What It Is and How To Do IT is directed toward three groups of people: (1) Business subject matter experts, (2) information technology professionals, (3) advanced students in Computer Science, Management Information Systems, and e-Business. Its purpose is to outline the basics of logical data modeling—specifically, data modeling for relational database management systems—in simple, practical terms and in a business context. The focus on relational data modeling is consciously made because it is superior in modeling real business activities.

Linked Open Data (LOD) is a pragmatic approach for realizing the Semantic Web vision of making the Web a global, distributed, semantics-based information system. This book presents an overview on the results of the research project “LOD2 -- Creating Knowledge out of Interlinked Data”. LOD2 is a large-scale integrating project co-funded by the European Commission within the FP7 Information and Communication Technologies Work Program. Commencing in September 2010, this 4-year project comprised leading Linked Open Data research groups, companies, and service providers from across 11 European countries and South Korea.
